Boston Dynamics wants a $74,500 robot dog to carry just two parcels to your door. Genius, or absurd?

In July 2026 Boston Dynamics posted a demo of Spot as a doorstep delivery assistant: van to porch, two parcels on a conveyor-style payload on its back. The demo is Confirmed (BD blog “Bridging the porch gap,” official YouTube). It is a company demo, not a named customer pilot.

Reported: Spot list price about $74,500 (The Verge, Jul 14 2026; article body also says “$75k~”). That is the base robot; the delivery payload is not priced in that coverage.

Company claims (labelled as claims):

  • Every 3 packages Spot delivers could free room for 1 more in the van; 2 parcels covers at least 60% of an average van's load (BD blog / TechSpot).
  • “Some estimates” put US last-mile spend near $90B a year (BD blog; not independently verified).
  • Pilot goal of 200 packages a day, 5 days a week, with early routes driver-controlled and remote operators on standby (BD blog / Business Insider). Per-robot vs per-route meaning is ambiguous.

Confirmed: a 2024 Spot delivery trial in Korea with CJ Logistics and Kia (Goyang).

Our reading: no logistics partner is named in current BD materials for the July 2026 demo. The porch gap is closed in a video, not on your street.
